Product Overview

What This Report Does

Most corporate ESG reports rely on estimates, internal surveys, or factor-based calculations to describe their environmental contributions. The Zolena Lab Corporate Green Space ESG Report is different: every indicator is derived from independent satellite remote sensing data — not self-reported by the company or estimated using generic factors.

The report quantifies the environmental value of a company's green space stewardship — whether that is a sponsored park, a maintained green corridor, a community garden, or a corporate campus green area — into a set of publishable, audit-traceable ESG indicators.

Every report includes a three-piece PR toolkit: a website ESG disclosure statement, an executive press quote, and a LinkedIn post caption — copy and publish immediately.

Methodology

How We Measure Green Space Value

Data Sources
Primary satellite: Copernicus Sentinel-2 L2A (European Space Agency open data, 10-metre resolution). Analysis window: May through September (growing season, snow-free period). Cloud cover filter: less than 20% per scene.

Carbon calculation standard: IPCC 2006 Guidelines Volume 4 Chapter 4 Table 4.9 (temperate and boreal forest biomass factors).

Reporting standard alignment: GRI 2021 Standard 413-1 (Local Communities), TCFD, with optional CSRD cross-reference.

Algorithm reference: Du, K. et al. University of Calgary, Schulich School of Engineering. CC BY 4.0.
Indicator A1
Carbon Sequestration Estimate
Derived from NDVI-based biomass proxy combined with IPCC 2006 biomass factors. Expressed in tonnes CO₂ equivalent per year. Uncertainty range disclosed per IPCC methodology.
Indicator A2
Vegetation Health Index (NDVI)
NDVI mean and distribution for the stewardship area. Benchmarked against Calgary Parks system baseline. Year-over-year trend if multi-year data available.
Indicator A3
Green Coverage Area
Satellite-classified vegetated area in square metres and percentage of total stewardship zone. Distinguishes tree canopy, shrub, grass, and impervious surface.
Indicator A4
Community Impact Score
Population within 500-metre radius of stewardship zone. Estimated green space access benefit per resident. GRI 413-1 community engagement alignment.

Zolena Green Space Score™

How We Score Green Space Quality

Each report includes a composite Zolena Green Space Score (0 to 100), calculated from four satellite-measured dimensions. The score enables year-over-year tracking and benchmarking against comparable Calgary parks.

DimensionWeightMeasurement MethodScore Range
Vegetation Health35%NDVI mean and distribution, Sentinel-20–35
Green Coverage Density25%Vegetated area fraction, satellite classification0–25

Score interpretation: 80 to 100 = Exceptional green asset; 60 to 79 = Strong performer; 40 to 59 = Adequate, improvement potential; below 40 = Significant improvement opportunity.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Sentinel-2 satellite data really measure carbon sequestration?
Sentinel-2 measures the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), which is a well-established proxy for vegetation biomass density. Combined with the IPCC 2006 Guidelines biomass factors for temperate forests, this produces an estimate of carbon sequestration capacity. The result is expressed with an uncertainty range per IPCC methodology. This approach is more defensible than purely factor-based estimates that use no site-specific data at all — and every step is auditable.
Is this a GRI-certified report?
Zolena Lab reports are aligned with GRI 2021 Standard 413-1 (Local Communities) in their structure and indicator selection. GRI certification is a separate process undertaken by the reporting company, not the data provider. Our report provides the satellite-measured data that companies need to complete GRI-aligned disclosures credibly. We do not claim GRI certification for our data service.
What size of green space qualifies for this report?
Sentinel-2 has a 10-metre spatial resolution, making it most effective for green spaces larger than approximately 1,000 square metres (0.1 hectares). Parks, green corridors, campus grounds, and community gardens of this size or larger are suitable. For smaller areas, we can discuss supplementary data approaches. The Calgary parks database in our system currently covers five major parks with areas ranging from 16 to 160 hectares.
How does this differ from hiring an environmental consultant?
Traditional environmental consultants typically conduct on-site measurements with physical instruments, which is thorough but expensive (often CAD $5,000 to $20,000 per site per year). The Zolena Lab approach uses satellite remote sensing to achieve comparable indicator coverage at a fraction of the cost, with the added advantage that satellite data is independently verifiable — no one controls what the satellite records. For companies seeking credible ESG disclosure without a large environmental consulting budget, satellite-based reporting offers a compelling alternative.
How long does it take to produce a report?
Standard delivery is 5 to 7 business days from order confirmation. Rush delivery (48 hours) is available for an additional fee. Delivery time depends on satellite imagery availability for the specific location and time period requested.
Can the report be used in an annual ESG disclosure or sustainability report?
Yes. The report is specifically designed to provide data that companies can cite in annual ESG disclosures, sustainability reports, and GRI-aligned filings. Each report includes a unique report ID and full data provenance documentation, enabling third-party verification of the underlying satellite data. The methodology appendix is written for an audit audience.
Does the report cover Chinese-language companies operating in Canada?
Yes. Zolena Lab produces reports in both English and Chinese (Simplified). For Chinese companies operating in Canada or seeking to meet Chinese ESG reporting requirements (CSRC or exchange ESG guidelines), we can structure the report to align with both Canadian and Chinese disclosure frameworks simultaneously.
What information do I need to provide to order a report?
We need: the name and location of the green space (address or GPS coordinates), the approximate boundary of the stewardship area, and your preferred reporting period (typically the most recent growing season). We handle all satellite data acquisition, analysis, and report production from that point.
